Voices of Diversity: Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE DL

  • 7 March 2022
  • 6pm-7pm
  • Online

To celebrate International Women’s Day, alumna Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE DL will share her story in the next Voices of Diversity talk online via MS Teams.

As one of Britain’s greatest Paralympic athletes, the Baroness won 11 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze medal across five Paralympic Games between 1988 and 2004. She won the London Wheelchair Marathon six times and held more than 30 world records throughout her career.

She studied BA Politics and Social Administration at Loughborough, graduating in 1991. The University gave the Baroness an Honorary Doctorate in 2001 and also inducted her into the Loughborough Sport Hall of Fame in 2011 to recognise her sporting achievements.

In 2005, the Baroness became a Dame for services to sport. Five years later she was created a life peer and was conferred as Baroness Grey-Thompson of Eaglescliffe in the County of Durham.

She is currently the Chair of ukactive, a Council Member for UK Sport, Member of the Sports Honours Committee, and is involved in a number of other organisations in roles such as Trustee, Adviser, and Non-Executive Director. She is a well-known television and radio sports commentator and is often involved in key events such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In this session, you will have the opportunity to hear about Baroness Grey-Thompson’s thoughts on breaking the bias for IWD, her sporting career and family life, and you will have the chance to ask questions about athletics, being a Para athlete, her role and influence in the House of Lords, and more.

This interactive session will be hosted by the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Teaching, Professor Rachel Thomson. You will be welcome to get involved by posting your questions in the chat.

Don’t miss your opportunity to hear from one of Loughborough’s most successful and inspiring alumni as we celebrate International Women’s Day.
